The Vijaya Krishna restaurant from Tooting has been ‘Highly Commended’ in the prestigious Tiffin Cup.
Vijaya Krishna was voted the best South Asian restaurant in Tooting by local residents in the summer and will receive a certificate and embroidered Tiffin Cup 2015 apron to make their achievement in this year’s competition.
The Tiffin Cup is an annual event, organised by a cross-party group of MPs, the Tiffin Club, to promote and celebrate South Asian cuisine in the UK. The organisers invited MPs to find the best restaurant in their constituency.
Sadiq asked local Tooting residents to send him their nominations for their favourite restaurant. With over 22 different restaurants nominated, the competition was very close.
Vijaya Krishna is a family run restaurant, which was first set up by Vijayan Multath over twenty years ago, and he now runs the restaurant alongside his son Biju.
Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting said:
“It is fantastic that out of over 120 restaurants who took part in the competition, Tooting’s own Vijaya Krishna was one of the handful of restaurants to be ‘Highly Commended’!
“This is such a prestigious award and to be honoured in this way is testament to the hard work of Vijayan, Biju and all the staff at the restaurant.
“I would also like to thank everyone who took part in this year’s competition – we are extremely lucky to be surrounded by so many fantastic
restaurants here in Tooting and it is important that we take the time to recognise them.”
Biju Vijayan said:
“We have always felt that our restaurant has been providing quality south Indian food for over 20 years. This recognition by our residents is the result of our consistency over the many years that have gone by. This is a shared success that has been made possible by the continuous efforts from our remarkable group of staff. A big thank you and credit must go to our local MP Rt Hon Sadiq Khan for running this competition and allowing small businesses like ours to share some local limelight.”
