The tube journey into work is noticeably quiet and there is only a fraction of the usual hustle and bustle here in Westminster.. it’s definitely that time of year when people are off on their travels! So I want to know where you’ve been or are heading off to – tweet me your holiday tales @sadiqkhan and see who can make me most jealous!
Mayor Boris Johnson’s Great Train Robbery
Speaking of the tube, under Mayor Boris Johnson, tube and bus fares in London have become the most expensive anywhere in the world. Not only are you paying more, you are getting worse value for your money. The Mayor has plans to cut staff and close Balham, Tooting Bec and Tooting Broadway ticket offices – making commuting more difficult and less safe.
If enough local residents sign up Boris Johnson will have to back down. I am calling on the Mayor to:
- Say NO to another inflation-busting fares hike
- Keep his manifesto promise and keep Balham, Tooting Bec and Tooting Broadway ticket offices open
Please sign the petition here - and don’t forget to share with your friends and family.
The fight continues to Save the Wheatsheaf
After I gained assurances from supermarket giant Tesco that they weren’t looking to buy The Wheatsheaf pub in Tooting Bec – I’ve been working hard to rule out other supermarket’s interest one by one – you can read their responses here.
You may have seen that Wandsworth Council have now made pub a community asset. This now means that should the pub be put up for sale, the community have six months to buy it. Given the location and size of The Wheatsheaf – this isn’t a realistic solution to save the pub – if the community can’t raise the money, a developer or retailer or someone else could still step in.
Therefore, it is really important that we continue to push Wandsworth Council to make an Article 4 Direction, which would mean that locally elected councillors would have a say on the future of the site. The Council have now acknowledged the strength of local feeling towards making an Article 4 Direction and are considering this action - which has not previously applied in Wandsworth before. You can read more about this here – and if you haven’t already added your name to my letter to the Council, you can do so here.
p.s. For those who aren’t lucky enough to be off jet setting in the next two weeks – like me you are probably running out of ideas to entertain the kids. Click here to see my summer planner which is full of ideas and activities taking place in Wandsworth and beyond.
