Wandsworth Guardian readers, it’s been another jam packed few weeks . As the local MP one of the best parts of the job is visiting the many fantastic organisations we have in our area. For example, in recent weeks I have visited Tooting Taekwondo Club, based at St Augustine’s Church and the Furzedown Project, which does a great job of supporting older members of our community. I also went along to the Balham and Tooting Community Association (BATCA) Fun Day and the Tooting Foodival, which are always some of the highlights of my year, and joined in with Tooting Gymnastics Club 25th birthday celebrations with world champion and Olympic medallist Beth Tweddle at Tooting Leisure Centre.
I also found time to accept my nomination for the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ outside Tooting Broadway tube station. You can watch it and have a laugh by going to www.sadiqkhan.org.uk/sadiq_takes_on_the_ice_bucket_challenge. As a patron for South London Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association, I am chuffed the campaign has now raised over £6million.
Speaking of great causes, were you one of the 15,000 plus who marched for the NHS this month? Here in Wandsworth we are fortunate to have St George’s Hospital on our doorstep. The team of local doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals do a brilliant job of serving our community, but their job is getting tougher all the time. That’s why I joined the People’s March for the NHS – to show my love and support for the NHS, and also my resolve to fight for its future.
Alongside the local community I’ve been fighting to save a number of other local facilities this month. For example, many Tooting residents are fighting proposals from a developer to turn the site of Tooting Constitutional Club, on Tooting High Street, into a carwash. Visit www.sadiqkhan.org.uk for updates on this and other campaigns.
