I’d like to start this month’s column by wishing Eid Mubarak to all those Wandsworth Guardian readers who recently celebrated Eid al-Adha, and a Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating in the coming week. Here in Wandsworth we are incredibly lucky to live in such a diverse and peaceful community; where people of all faiths, backgrounds and ethnicities live together side by side. Never is this seen better than during celebrations such as Eid, Diwali, Hanukkah and Christmas, when we all come together to celebrate.
We are also fortunate in Wandsworth to be surrounded by so many fantastic green spaces, such as Tooting and Wandsworth Commons and Battersea Park. But right now Wandsworth residents are missing out - as the council is refusing the allow ‘ParkRun’, a volunteer-run, non-revenue raising organisation that organises free runs on the weekend, to use our parks for free. As the local MP, and a keen runner myself, I’m supporting the grassroots campaign to bring ParkRun to Wandsworth – visit www.sadiqkhan.org.uk to sign the petition.
I’m hoping this campaign won’t last as long as our fight to bring 20mph zones to Wandsworth! Ever since I was first elected in 2005, I have campaigned alongside local councillors for more 20mph zones, and I must admit there were times I thought Wandsworth Council were never going to back down. But after receiving hundreds upon hundreds of signatures supporting our campaign, the council have finally got on board and 20mph is due to come to Furzedown and parts of Balham and Tooting Bec soon. Then, the next step is make sure it comes to the rest of Wandsworth. Watch this space.
Finally, would you like to know more about local health and well-being organisations here in Wandsworth? Come and join me and the Mayor of Wandsworth for a community coffee morning on 24th October. Email email@example.com or call 020 7219 6967 for details.
