After raising directly with the Chief Executive of the supermarket giant, Tescos, local residents’ concerns with the threat of Tescos turning our much-loved local, the Wheatsheaf, into a supermarket Sadiq Khan MP has now received assurances that Tesco will not be taking over the Tooting Bec pub.
Sadiq Khan MP said,
“I am delighted that after contacting Tesco’s Chief Executive personally, I have now received the assurance from Tesco that they are not going to take over our local pub, the Wheatsheaf. With several supermarkets already in the proximity, we certainly don’t need another.
“But the campaign doesn’t stop here. The next task is to make sure no other supermarket retailer is allowed to turn the Wheatsheaf into a supermarket or shop. This is a fantastic community asset that we do not want to lose. I am going to continue to work with the local community to ensure we do not allow this to happen.”
Sadiq later received the written assurances from Tesco below:
“I am very pleased that I have now received these written assurances from Tesco which clearly states they will be leaving The Wheatsheaf pub alone. Local residents and campaigners can feel reassured that Tesco have now been ruled out for definite.
“With Tesco out of the running – I am working hard with local residents to secure assurances from the freehold owners that they will not be selling the much loved Tooting Bec local, and at the same time from other supermarket giants that they will leave our pub in peace – watch this space..."
