Southern and Thameslink Train Operators this week announced plans to close the ticket offices at Tooting, Balham and Wandsworth Common stations and introduce “station hosts” instead. The station hosts would be available in Tooting station during weekdays and Saturdays from 0630-0015, and on Sundays from 0930 -2145. Station hosts would be available in Wandsworth Common Station during weekdays and Saturdays from 0600-2200 and on Sundays from 0700-2200. The hosts would cover Balham station during weekdays and Saturdays from 05:30-22:00 and on Sundays from 07:30-22:00.
If the planned changes go ahead, they will be introduced this summer.
Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting, said: “many concerned residents have contacted me about these proposals and I would urge everyone to respond to the consultation to have their concerns heard. People are most worried about how the new station hosts will be able to deal with complex or unusual ticket requests, so I have written to the operators to seek assurances that all tickets, including, for instance, travel cards for children, or those wishing to travel beyond Zone 6, will still be on offer.
“I am also keen to receive assurances that commuters and service users won’t be expected to book online before they travel as not all residents have access to the internet and these services must be provided for all”.
All three stations should be advertising the changes via posters in the effected stations. You can have you say on the proposals here, via email to firstname.lastname@example.org or by writing to London TravelWatch, 169 Union Street, London, SE1 0LL. Please use 'GTR ticket office changes' in the subject line. Consultation ends at midnight on March 13.
