“My dad, a bus driver working all the hours he could, lived in council housing and put money aside to buy his own home and make us upwardly mobile,” he said.

“Could today’s bus driver get a subsidised council rent? Probably not. My dad hated the idea of us borrowing money, so I’m not sure what he would have thought about tuition fees approaching £30,000 or £50,000.”
