Following my email to you last week, I headed off to Tooting Bec Athletics Track for a #YesWeKhan London Marathon training session with students from my old school, Ernest Bevin. At the track I was joined by 13 year old Mohamed, an exceptional Ernest Bevin student who has been selected to run the London Mini-Marathon this year, which takes place just before the official run. The year 7 and 8 students came along to film us for their BBC News School Report project.Check out the final product for yourself here – it is definitely worth a watch.
With just two weeks to go until Marathon day, I’m starting to get nervous. But the support from the local community has been overwhelming – even this morning I am writing this having just come from a useful session with Alan Coles at Streatham Osteopaths, on Moyser Road, in Furzedown. Special thanks must also be given to Tooting’s very own poet laureate, Mike Tynan – who penned this poem about my #YesWeKhan efforts.
Award winning campaigning
Earlier this month Wandsworth Council launched their consultation on introducing 20mph zones across Furzedown and parts of Balham and Tooting Bec, after years of campaigning from the local community and councillors. I am delighted to say that all our hard work has been recognised, with an award from the road safety charity Brake! This is brilliant news, and everyone involved in the campaign should be extremely proud. Click here to find out more. And if you live in the consultation areas, remember - the consultation closes 4th April.
Parliament in action
Thank you to everyone who got in touch about last week’s PMQ draw, and well done to Tooting resident, Emma, whose name was drawn and who came along to Parliament on Wednesday with her mum for what was, as ever a lively session.
There are plenty of opportunities to come and visit Parliament, and if you’re between the ages of 16 and 25, there’s the perfect opportunity on 7th April. I am hosting an event for young people, to hear their views on what matters to them, with the chance to quiz both myself and fellow MPs including Chuka Umunna, MP for Streatham, and Gloria DePiero MP who leads on Labour’s work on women and equalities. If you, or anyone you know would like to come along, please reply to this email asap to reserve your place.
Until next time.
P.S. Tooting’s guerrilla knitter has now been revealed! Click here to find out who it is...
