Rumours have been circulating that the doors of The Wheatsheaf pub would be closing in the New Year, as the current tenants, Antic's lease comes to an end.
This emerged after 18 months of campaigning from the local community, Sadiq Khan MP and local councillors, resulting in planning protection being put in place to try and prevent the pub being sold to a supermarket or turned into luxury flats.
Keen to get to the bottom of the rumours, Sadiq Khan called on the owners, Enterprise Inns for answers.
In a statement issued to Sadiq, Enterprise Inns have committed to keeping a pub on the site, and getting a new tenant in with minimal disruptions. They also reassured that there should be no need for any period of closure.
Sadiq and ‘Save the Wheatsheaf’ campaigners have welcomed the good news.
Sadiq Khan MP said:
"After eighteen months of campaigning, I wasn't about to let the pub close at the last hurdle!
"I welcome the commitment to keep the Wheatsheaf open, and share the relief of local residents that we shouldn't see the pub closing its doors anytime soon.
"Don’t worry, I'll be watching developments very closely to make sure Enterprise honour their commitments and we get a new pub company in as soon as possible"
A spokesperson from Enterprise Inns PLC said:
“We understand that there has been speculation regarding the future of the Wheatsheaf. Enterprise Inns plc is committed to retaining a successful pub business in this vibrant location. We can again confirm that we do not have any plans to dispose of the Wheatsheaf or foresee any period of closure.”
