Yesterday was like the scene from the ‘Likely Lads’, as I tried to avoid hearing the England result before I got back from a number of visits out of London last night. Although I needn’t have bothered, given the disappointing result! But all hope is not yet lost, Argentina, my draw from the Team Khan sweepstake, is it still in with a chance!
Still far to go…
My bus driver Dad could only have dreamed, as a new arrival to South West London in the 1960’s from Pakistan, that three decades later his son would be the local Member of Parliament. But when it comes to racial inequality, whilst we have come a long way, we still have far to go.
42% of London’s population is black or minority ethnic; and research shows that they are much more likely to be unemployed, earn less and six times more likely to be stop and searched by the police. The London Mayor has deputies dedicated to transport, housing, business and enterprise, and police, but there is no one dedicated to tackling the growing inequality in our capital. We will never be able to improve race equality without a clear lead from Government. That is why this week I have called on Boris Johnson to appoint a Deputy Mayor for Equality. It would send a powerful message to black and minority ethnic Londoners if they saw someone given a senior role alongside the Mayor of London to tackle this problem.
I am pleased to say the idea has the backing of Baroness Doreen Lawrence and you can find out why, here. You can also read my recent column for the South London Press on the need to address both racial and social inequality in London here.
Fancy a Big Day Out?
The Furzedown Big Day Out is always one of the highlights of the summer for me and my family, and this year it looks set to be one of the best yet. The sun is set to shine and the brilliant team from the Furzedown Community Network have lined up lots of exciting activities such as African drumming, tug of war, a bake off and lots of live music. Although I think I may have to give the skateboard coaching a miss!
So if you’re free this weekend, why not head with the family to Furzedown Recreation Ground on Saturday from 10am (entry off Furzedown Drive, Spalding Road or Chillerton Road)? All the information you need is here, and I hope to see you there.
You may also want pop along to join me at my old school’s summer fayre first. Fircroft Primary, on Fircroft Road, are hosting their fayre on Saturday from 12pm – 3pm.
Until next time,
P.S. Are you or someone in your family a small business owner in Wandsworth? I’m hosting an event in Parliament on 1st July, to bring small business owners in our area together discuss what extra support they need from the Government and Wandsworth Council. We’ll be joined by the Deputy Mayor of Wandsworth, Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce and many of my fellow MPs. Please reply to this email if you would like to come along.
