A new charity has just launched in Tooting which provides good quality baby clothes and equipment, donated by Tooting families, to Tooting families who need baby equipment, clothing and toys, but can’t afford to buy them.

Little Village was set up by local mums, Sophia Parker, Nijma Cooper Khan and Nina Moore. The charity, run entirely by volunteers, holds donation days when people can drop in their items. The next donation day will be held on March 2 at the Balham Scout Centre on the corner of Balham High Road and Elmfield Road.

Sadiq Khan MP said: “As a parent myself, I remember how much baby equipment we used when the children were small, much of which was expensive and vital but the children soon grew out of it. This is a wonderful way for local parents to pass their baby kit on to other local parents, solving the dual problems of some parents drowning in barely-used baby clothes while other parents struggle to provide what their children need”.

A fire in a bedroom at Springfield Hospital this week was quickly brought under control by staff at the hospital, working with the fire service.

Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting, said “staff at the hospital and the fire service did an excellent and professional job to make sure that patients were kept safe”.

The fire, on February 7, started in a bedroom, and was quickly brought under control.

Sadiq Khan said: “I understand that, as a precautionary measure, two staff and a patient were taken to hospital for possible smoke inhalation but I am happy to say they were safely discharged soon afterwards”. He added: “the fact that two members of staff ended up in hospital shows the dedication of those who work at Springfield and the challenging and sometimes dangerous situations they face. I know that the staff at Springfield do a great job and I would like to congratulate them for handling this situation so well.”

An investigation into the fire is underway.

A stretch of lighting close to Tooting Common, along Church Lane and Furzedown Road, has been restored after local people and MP Sadiq Khan complained to the Council and to UK Power Networks (UKPN) about the dangers of leaving this public right of way unlit.

Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting, said: “Local people were understandably concerned when they noticed that a stretch of public road and footpath running along the common was no longer lit. The long winter evenings meant that commuters using the path were having to return home in the dark”.

“For the safety of all Common users, I urged the Council and UKPN to restore the lighting urgently and I am glad to report that generators have now been installed as a stopgap measure until the full repairs can be made”.

The stretch in question, which is well-used, usually has 28 illuminated lights columns. Maintenance of the columns is the responsibility of UKPN.

Following the intervention of the local MP, all the lamp columns are now working again after temporary generators were installed.
