This year marks the 10th Anniversary of The Tiffin Cup, an annual Parliamentary competition, organised by a cross-party group of MPs, which aims to find the UK’s best South Asian restaurant.

Originally created by Leicester East MP, Keith Vaz, the Tiffin Cup celebrates the UK’s South Asian cuisine. Every MP is invited to put forward the best South Asian restaurant in their constituency, and a select few of those are short-listed by mystery shopper-style judges. These restaurants are then invited to the House of Commons, to take part in a ‘cook-off’ in one of the many outlets around Parliament. The winner of this will be awarded 2016’s Tiffin Cup and awarded the accolade of ‘Best South Asian Restaurant in the UK’ by the Tiffin Club.

Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting, said: “We all know that Tooting is home to the best curry restaurants in the country but having lived here all my life, I have too many favourite restaurants in Tooting and couldn’t possibly choose just one – so I need the help of the people of Tooting to choose which restaurant should go forward.

The Tiffin Cup offers a great opportunity to show off our local talent to the rest of the country and I look forward to receiving nominations from local foodies”.

Wandsworth Council recently agreed to consult on a proposal – originally put forward by Labour councillors – to introduce a 20mph limit on all residential roads in the borough.

Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting, said: “I wholeheartedly support this important proposal and have always urged residents to back the borough-wide limit. Cutting speeds on our roads reduces casualties among pedestrians and cyclists, reduces rat-running by cars along the streets where we live and makes our streets quieter and our air cleaner. However, once again, Wandsworth’s consultation process fell short of residents’ expectations. Residents could only respond online and the information provided by the Council was insufficient.”

Following the intervention by the MP, Wandsworth agreed to include a postal address and telephone number for residents to use and agreed to provide more information to assist residents in making their decision. Sadiq Khan has publicised these details in the local media as they are missing from the Council’s consultation pages.

Transport for London (TfL) will begin ground investigation work in Tooting early next week to assess the ground conditions. The assessment will be used to inform TfL’s preference for which location, Tooting or Balham, should host the Crossrail 2 station.

Three boreholes will be drilled, one at Blackenham Road (near the junction with Totterdown Street) on March 29, one on Graveney Road (near the junction with Selkirk Road) on April 5 and one on Bickley Street (near the junction with Mitcham Road) on April 12. Each borehole is expected to take approximately one to two weeks to drill.

Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting, said “It is important the residents know exactly what is happening on their streets and I would like to reassure them that TfL has committed to keeping disturbance to a minimum and to ensuring all appropriate safety measures are in place”.
