There have been a lot of worried people contacting me about a supposed threat to Freedom Pass funding in London.


First of all I’d like to assure you in no uncertain terms that the Freedom Pass is not under threat.  Anyone who says otherwise is being deliberately misleading. I am afraid reckless electioneering has already begun and many vulnerable residents are being scared as a consequence.

GCSE results for the whole of England published last week show that  Ernest Bevin College has yet again increased the number of pupils getting five or more GCSEs at A*-C grade (including English and Maths), to a record 61% of pupils.

This is an increase of 35% since 2005, making Ernest Bevin the 5th most improved school in the country at GCSE, since 2005. 

84% of pupils achieved 5 A-C grades at GCSE, excluding English and Maths.

Tooting MP Sadiq Khan has pledged his support to a campaign for a new pedestrian crossing outside St Boniface’s church on Mitcham Road.

Father Ernest Bonvini started the petition with parishioners, retailers and local residents, after, John Chivers, 84, was hit by a bus and killed outside the church in November last year as he attempted to cross the road to attend a service at the church.

The petition now has almost 1000 signatures, was officially handed over to Sadiq Khan MP Wandsworth Council by campaigners on Friday 15th January. 

The accident follows a series of serious incidents on the same stretch of road leading up to Amen Corner.

In the three years up to December 2008 were 80 road traffic accidents on Mitcham Road in which people were injured, including 19 serious casualties. Almost half the accidents involved pedestrians.
