Parkrun’s first run on Tooting Common took place on 30 January , at 9am, with more than 150 runners turning out for the inaugural event.

The run took off on the Common from the corner of Hillbury Road and Dr Johnson Avenue. More than 30 volunteers helped to officiate the event and could be easily identified in high visibility vests.

Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting, said: "It’s been a long campaign, which many local residents have led and been involved in, so I am delighted that the first Parkrun event on Tooting Common finally took place on Saturday and, of course, the people of Tooting turned out in force”.

Sadiq added: “Parkrun provides the opportunity to run in a friendly and sociable environment, with the support of others. It also helps to attract new people to running, helps bring communities together and has clear public health benefits, including tackling obesity and improving physical well-being.

"As a keen runner myself, I was honoured to start the run. I was also honoured to welcome Paul Sinton-Hewitt, the founder of Parkrun, to Tooting to celebrate with us”.

He added “Wandsworth has a reputation for excellence in these games, having won for the first time in 2013. Volleyball and judo are two disciplines the borough excels at and two members of volleyball Team GB, Peter and Dami Bakare, used to compete for Wandsworth in the London Youth Games”.

Wandsworth Common's railway bridge has been used for decades by commuters, pedestrians, railway users and families accessing the common and Wandsworth common station.

Sadiq Khan, the MP for the area, said: “because it is so well-used and provides a safe and convenient route between the common and the station, I was concerned to hear from a local resident that signs had gone up claiming the bridge was not a public right of way”.
